Digital event formats as a driver of active leisure

Lake and Alps links the regions around Lake Constance, the Alpstein and the Pre-Alps into a versatile cycling destination. Instead of betting on a single race or a fixed event date, the region uses the digital LaceUp Trophy format to motivate cyclists to get out into nature over a period of weeks.

The basic principle is simple: defined routes and places are stored digitally as checkpoints. Participants collect them individually, at their own pace, within a freely chosen time window. GPS tracking, leaderboards and digital analysis create motivation, comparability and a sense of community – without any classic event infrastructure.

More time outdoors thanks to flexible participation

A key advantage of digital event formats is their flexibility. Participation is not tied to a specific day or start block. That lowers the entry barrier significantly – especially for leisure riders, tourists and ambitious everyday cyclists.

For Lake and Alps this means:

  • More people are regularly active outdoors, not just on one event day
  • Routes are ridden deliberately and spread across the season
  • Off-peak periods and lesser-known route sections gain attention

The Trophy format thus promotes not only physical activity, but a conscious engagement with landscape, region and infrastructure.

Value for the tourism region

For tourism destinations, a digital event format offers several strategic advantages:

Visibility and reach
Digital challenges create recurring touchpoints with the region. Rankings, personal statistics and social sharing generate organic reach beyond the active community.

Season extension
Instead of a one-off event, a multi-week experience emerges. Guests stay active longer, come back repeatedly, or plan additional overnight stays.

Low operational complexity
Because start, execution and scoring all happen digitally, there are no costs for road closures, staffing or heavy logistics. The format is scalable and usable long-term.

Valuable data and insights
Participation figures, route usage and activity behaviour provide a solid basis for developing offers, route planning and marketing.

Value for participants and partners

For cyclists, a playful experience with a personal connection emerges. Every ride counts, progress is measurable and comparable. At the same time, the sporting challenge stays compatible with everyday life.

Local partners benefit too:

  • Hotels, restaurants and bike service providers are deliberately integrated into the routes
  • Digital incentives and rewards increase regional value creation
  • Emotional attachment to the destination grows through repeated experiences

Digital events as the sustainable future of cycling tourism

The Lake and Alps example shows that digital event formats are more than a technological add-on. They are an effective instrument for motivating people to be active outdoors in the long run – while positioning a region as a modern, active destination.

With the LaceUp Trophy format, sport, nature, tourism and digitalisation combine meaningfully – without event stress, but with a lasting effect for region and community.
